Cortisone is a corticosteroid released by the adrenal gland in response to stress and is a potent anti-inflammatory agent. Artificial preparations containing cortisone are injected directly into the affected joint to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. The effects may last for several weeks and cortisone injections are recommended in injuries that cause pain & inflammation and those don’t require surgical treatment.
Zilretta is a newer type of injection available to patients who have previously benefitted from steroid injection, but the results have not been long lasting. Zilretta packages the commonly used steroid Kenalog into microspheres. The microspheres localize on the synovium (joint lining) and slowly dissolve over time to release the Kenalog. Clinical data has shown longer relief when compared to traditional steroid injection.
Zilretta is indicated as an intra-articular injection for the management of osteoarthritis pain of the knee.
